PRELUDE   “They’ll Know We Are Christians”  Peter Scholtes

WELCOME

*OPENING PRAISE AND WORSHIP

“To God Be the Glory”                         P. 66

*GATHERING PRAYER AND ADORATION

One:   Happy are those who delight in the Word of God.

All:     They are like trees planted by streams of water,

            and they will flourish.

*CALL TO CONFESSION

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION

All:      Holy God, we confess that we fail to put our trust in you completely.  Instead, we calculate our gains and losses, hoarding the things that do not lead to abundant life.  Forgive us, and help us to reassure only you, that we may follow you faithfully and discover the blessings only you can give.  Amen.

                             (Moment of Silent Personal Confession)

*DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS

*PASSING OF CHRISTIAN PEACE

PASTORAL PRAYER (Joys and Concerns)

One:   We pray for the mission of your church and thank you for the joy and encouragement we receive from you through our church family; give us the grace to plant faith and build love wherever you lead us to the benefit of your reign.

All:     Lord of Love, hear our prayer.

One:   We pray for all leaders and people of this world; give us a clear vision of the world as you intend and the will to realize that dream of justice and peace for all.

All:     Lord of Love, hear our prayer.

One:   We pray for all who suffer in body, mind, or spirit; bring refreshment to their hearts through Christ that they may know your abiding presence and power to comfort and heal.

All:     Lord of Love, hear our prayer.

One:   We pray for your creation; convict us of the ways in which we break down and destroy the fabric of your world and give us the will to amend our ways as we seek to live in harmony with the goodness you have created.

All:     Lord of Love, hear our prayer.

One:   We pray for the dying and those who have died; may they rest in your eternal glory with all the saints in light.

All:     Lord of Love, hear our prayer.

THE LORD’S PRAYER (“debts” and “debtors”)

HYMN OF PREPARATION

“Christ, You Call Us All to Service”           P. 571

SCRIPTURE READINGS

Luke 14:25-33 New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition

The Cost of Discipleship

25 Now large crowds were traveling with him, and he turned and said to them, 26 “Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple. 27 Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. 28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has enough to complete it? 29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it will begin to ridicule him, 30 saying, ‘This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.’ 31 Or what king, going out to wage war against another king, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32 If he cannot, then while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for the terms of peace. 33 So therefore, none of you can become my disciple if you do not give up all your possessions.

MESSAGE         “The Price of Admission”             Pastor Jeremy

*STATEMENT OF FAITH  “Apostle’s Creed”

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.  I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.  On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

*HYMN OF RESPONSE

“‘Take Up Your Cross,’ the Savior Said”                         P. 351
