PRELUDE   “Shine Jesus, Shine”   arr.  Peggy Bettcher

“Now the Green Blade Rises”  P. 311

One:   The Spirit and the bride say, ‘“Come.”

All:      Let everyone who is thirsty come.

One:   Let everyone who hears say, “Come.”

All:      Let everyone who is thirsty come.

One:   Let anyone who wishes take the water of life as a gift.

All:      Let everyone who is thirsty come.

One:   Come to the tree of life, the Alpha and Omega.

All:      Amen.  Come, Lord Jesus.

All:      Merciful God, day by day we have failed to believe in your presence and your promised forgiveness.  We have not trusted in your power to give the riches we cannot see.  We have not honored our sisters and brothers as heirs of your desired peace.  We have not forgiven others or ourselves.  Give us the wisdom and faith to be your body on earth, that we may rejoice in the presence of your saving bounty, to the glory of your ascended Son.  Amen.

                    (Moment of Silent Personal Confession)

PASTORAL PRAYER (Joys and Concerns)

One:   We give you thanks for the community of faith throughout the world.  According to your compassion, Holy God, guide your church to proclaim the gospel so that its wide-open door is apparent to everyone; heal the great chasm that exists between our peoples; help our leaders and teachers to shepherd us with wisdom.

All:      Hear us, O God; your mercy is great.

One:   We give you thanks for nations and leaders.  By your power, O God, inspire all people to insist on just economies and social structures; prepare our young people to turn their zeal into peace; unbind those who are discouraged, and teach us all to persevere.

All:      Hear us, O God; your mercy is great.

One:   We give you thanks for all creation.  Open our eyes and ears to see and know more about this earthly home, which you created for your joy and ours.  Show us how to love the creatures and plants we would otherwise ignore and neglect.

All:      Hear us, O God; your mercy is great.

One:   Merciful Lord, we pray for those among your people here and throughout the world who are in trouble – the sick and hungry, those who are unjustly imprisoned and abused, children without shelter, adults without work.

All:      Hear us, O God; your mercy is great.

One:   We give you thanks for the saints whose witness has nourished our faith throughout the ages.  Their assurance in word and deed has fed us with the truth of your Word.

All:      Hear us, O God; your mercy is great.

THE LORD’S PRAYER (“debts” and “debtors”)

“Christ, Whose Glory Fills the Skies”                P. 91

Acts 1:1-11 New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition

The Promise of the Holy Spirit and Ascension of Jesus

1 In the first book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and teach 2 until the day when he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 3 After his suffering he presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. 4 While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem but to wait there for the promise of the Father. “This,” he said, “is what you have heard from me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He replied, “It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” 9 When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. 11 They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

MESSAGE    “Leaving Things in Capable Hands”      Pastor Jeremy

*STATEMENT OF FAITH  “Apostle’s Creed”

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.  I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.  On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

*HYMN OF RESPONSE   “They’ll Know We Are Christians”   P. 595

One:   The Lord be with you.

All:     And also with you.

One:   Lift up your hearts.

All:     We lift them up unto the Lord.

One:   Let us give thanks unto the Lord our God.

All:     It is proper and right so to do.

HYMN OF COMMUNION   “We Meet as Friends at Table”  P. 704

                                                                                       (Vs. 1 & 2)

All:      We thank you, God, for inviting us to this table where we have known the presence of Christ and have received all Christ’s gifts.  Strengthen our faith, increase our love for one another, and let us show forth your praise in our lives; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

  • Dedicating our Gifts (In Unison)

Gracious and giving God, you are the One who first has given to us all that we need for life.  Guide us to use what we now gather for the well-being of your church, for those in need of shelter and food, for all who suffer for want of your Word, and for nurturing faith in your people.  In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord.  Amen.

Response after Concerns:  Lord, in your mercy,

hear our prayers.

Response after Joys:  Praise be to God!
